Setup
Startup/Initialization/Port Requirements #
The following information is presented for reference. Typical network setups should not need any additional
configuration; however, the following information could be found useful in troubleshooting any connection issues.
Upon booting, the NIC makes a DNS request to identify the cloud server for which it is configured. At this point,
the NIC may optionally attempt to PING the cloud server (depending on configuration) and, if successful, will
establish a secure WebSocket connection with the server (port 443). The NIC then utilizes WebSocket messages
to securely send reports to and receive commands from the cloud server.
During initialization and operation, the NIC device may utilize the following services:
- DNS (TCP 53) – The NIC looks up the domain name of the cloud server to which it needs to connect.
- NTP (UDP 123) – In order to establish a secure connection, an NTP server may be used to synchronize time in order to properly validate security certificates.
- IGMP – Typically a single “PING” of the server is utilized to verify that the device is connected to a network and the server is up before a connection is established.
- HTTPS (TCP 443) – This is the port for secured communications with the cloud servers. The NIC utilizes TLS encryption to ensure the security of data while in transit between the NIC and the cloud server.
- WebSockets (TCP 443) – For ongoing reporting of attribute data and receipt of action requests from cloud server, the NIC establishes a secure WebSocket connection with the server over which the data is transferred.
Setup Instructions #
- Obtain the network name (SSID), security type and password from your systems administrator.
- Download and install the FollettConnect application from the Apple app store or Google Play store.
I can’t find the app in the store
– Your phone, tablet, and or operating system do not meet the minimum requirements. (Secure equipment
less than three years old) - Launch the app, and agree to all pop-up requests; you should see the FollettConnect setup screen.
- Turn power on to the Follett appliance.
- Turn on the Bluetooth connectivity on your smartphone or device (for Android, ensure the Bluetooth icon
appears on top of your phone screen). - Tap the Setup icon (Fig. 1).

- Available device(s) will appear in Choose Appliance (Fig. 2). If multiple units are present, select the
Serial Number of the unit you are configuring. (see serial number plate located inside the refrigerator).

- I do not see the Serial Number in the list of appliances
– The NIC has no power, check the LEDs (for undercounters, remove kick plate). The left most LED should be blinking 1 s ON/1 s OFF. If power LED is not blinking, check connection/wiring harness from control board to NIC. - You are out of range of the Bluetooth signal
– Move to with 10 feet of the appliance - Another device is running FollettConnect in range of the appliance
– Close the app running on any other device
- Tap the Appliance ID to select it. You will be taken to the Connection page.
Available devices are greyed-out and cannot be selected
– The NIC is rebooting wait 2 minutes - To provision the appliance, tap Connect To WiFi (Fig. 3).

10. When the Choose Network screen appears (Fig. 4), select your Wi-Fi network.

11. Enter the password (Fig. 5) exactly as assigned to you by your systems administrator (case sensitive).

12. If the network ID is not shown it may be that the network is hidden by your systems administrator. To
connect to this type of network follow these steps:
- Obtain the network name, security type and password from your systems administrator.
- Select the networks icon from the bottom right of the app.
- Select the + icon in the upper right-hand corner.
- Enter the Network name, security type and password exactly as provided by your systems administrator (case sensitive).
- Select save to store the network and select it from the saved networks when connecting the appliance to Wi-Fi.
For issues related to connecting to the network, refer to your systems administrator.
13. It could take a few minutes for the device to provision, then receive a response from the server before a
Wi-Fi connection is made.
Note: the app may refresh a few times during network card configuration and establish communication to
Cloud.
14. The two icons at the top should change to a Wi-Fi symbol and a Cloud. Wi-Fi will turn Green and state
“Connected”. The Cloud icon will turn Blue and state “Connected” when connection to back end is made (Fig. 4).

- If the Wi-Fi symbol is good, but the cloud symbol is not connecting, this indicates that the device is connected to the local Wi-Fi network, but is being prevented from talking to the cloud server. You will need to see your systems administrator to help determine what is causing the issue.
- Once the connection has been made, Bluetooth can be turned off for additional network security; use
the advanced menu on the appliance to turn Bluetooth off.
Note: Bluetooth will need to be turned back on if changes need to be made to the network name or
password. - How to save networks for re-use:
Select the networks icon from the bottom right of the app
Select the + icon in the upper right-hand corner
Enter the Network name, security type and password exactly as provided by your systems administrator
(case sensitive)
Select save to store the network and select it from the saved networks when connecting the appliance to
Wi-Fi - Go to www.dicksoneone.com, or download the DicksonOne app, and follow the directions to create an
account and begin monitoring your Follett product.
