    About Calibrating the Chart Recorder

    • Calibrating your instrument is essential. Over time, environmental monitoring devices become inaccurate, and must be recalibrated to certain standards.
    • Dickson recommends sending your devices back to Dickson, to be re-calibrated, as our Calibration Lab is A2LA Certified.

    A Snapshot of Changing Charts

Overwhelmed by the plethora of products? Give us a call at 1-800-757-3747. We would love to help.

    Causes and Troubleshooting:

    1. The chart may be hung up or restricted, possibly caused by a rip on the outer edge of the chart. The chart may also be caught between the arm and pen arm platform. that the gears are not binding or slipping by manually advancing the chart one full rotation with the chart rotation button.

    2. Unit may also be locked up. This can be confirmed by pressing any of the buttons on the keypad. If the unit is locked up, there will be no response to button presses.

    3. The recorder may appear to be working, but the readings won’t change and the chart will not rotate. To correct this, remove the battery and AC power (if applicable) for a minute and then re-power.

Trouble Symptoms Probable Causes Suggested Corrections
Unit is locked up. Can be confirmed by pressing any of the buttons on the keypad. If the Chart Recorder is locked up there will be no responses to button presses, however, the unit may appear to be working, but the readings won’t change and the chart will not rotate. Remove power and battery then re-power
K-type Thermocouple is used. The probe may need to be replaced or the extension cable Replace the probe with another K-type thermocouple probe or remove the extension cable if applicable.
Chart Recorder will not operate at all. Caused by an interruption of power Remove batteries and transformer, wait about 1-minute and power back up. This does not affect the unit’s functionality or calibration in any way.
Why won’t the pen respond to changes? If the pen will not move from the bottom of the chart scale, there may be a leak in the system. The unit will need to be serviced and re-calibrated. Make sure the pen arm screw is snug, not allowing the pen to swing freely.
Instrument is not responding to a key press? The key may be pressed too hard. The recorder may be locked up. If so, there will be no response to button presses. The unit may appear to be working, but the readings won’t change and the chart will not rotate. If your instrument is not responding to a key press, try using slower, firmer key presses. remove the AC power and the battery, wait a moment, and then re-power

    Symptoms Probable Causes Suggested Corrections
Mismatch Display Using charts for another range or wrong dip switches Ensure the proper chart is installed and that the dip switches are set for that specific chart
Ensure that the gears are not binding or slipping by manually advancing the chart one full rotation with the chart rotation button. The pens may not be completely inserted on the pen arms.
Mismatch Display Pen Home is not set properly Press and hold the Chart Rotation and Alarm button, then press the On/Off button. Hold down all three buttons until the unit comes on, the light should be flashing amber. When the amber light becomes steady, press the Alarm button twice, the light should alternate between Red and Green and the pen will move toward the top of the chart. The pen should stop on the Maximum Temperature Line of the chart that is being used. If the pen is not exactly on the Maximum Temperature Line, use the Alarm button to move the pen down and the Chart Rotation button to move the pen up.
Why don’t the readings of the temperature pen and display exactly match? The cause of this could be because Hysteresis or wrong
    chart.
Hysteresis is a naturally occurring mechanical discrepancy up to 2% of range. Check to see that the proper chart is installed.
    Causes and Troubleshooting:
    1. The chart may be hung up or restricted, possibly caused by a rip on the outer edge of the chart.

    2. The chart may also be caught between the arm and pen arm platform.

    3. The incorrect chart may have been installed for the selected chart speed.

    4. To ensure that the gears are not binding or slipping, manually advance the chart one full rotation with the chart rotation button.

    Symptoms Probable Causes Suggested Corrections
Hung up chart A rip on the outer edge of the chart Check to see if the chart is caught between the arm and pen arm and adjust accordingly
Penn has too much tension Too much tension can cause the chart to pinch the dial plate Ensure that the pen does not have too much tension
Bad battery The battery is inserted inccorectly or a dead battery Check that the battery is inserted in the correct way or replace battery.
Chart is inserted wrong Chat could also be ripped or torn Ensure the center strip of the chart is inserted properly into the black center hub of the recorder

    Causes and Troubleshooting:
    1. Is the Pen Arm screw secure? If not, tighten until it is properly secured.

    2. Is the Chart Recorder sitting on or mounted to a surface prone to vibration? If so, consider relocating the recorder.

    3. For Temperature only units, try removing the unit from the application and placing it in an isolated, low air flow environment like a zip lock freezer bag or desk drawer. If the pen traces straighten out, the traces may have actually been caused by the changes in your application.

    Causes and Troubleshooting:

The chart recorder and digital display are actually two independent measuring instruments, with different specifications. There is certain amount of discrepancy allowed between chart and display.

    1. The amount of the discrepancy depends on the range of the chart recorder. An SL4120, for example, has a scale of -20 to +120 degrees, that’s a range of 140 degrees. That means a 2.8 degree tolerance for the chart.
    2. The digital display has tolerance of 3.6 degrees, which means there is a maximum allowed discrepancy of 6.4 degrees between the chart and display. The chart may be adjusted using the pen adjust screw on the face of the unit. If the display is out of specification, the display can be replaced but not calibrated.
    Causes and Troubleshooting:
    1. Dip switches set for a specific range. Using a chart for another range could cause mismatching display and chart readings. Make sure the proper chart is installed and that the dip switches are set for that specific chart.
    2. The “Pen Home” may not be set properly. To check and adjust the “Pen Home” setting, press and hold the Chart Rotation and Alarm button, then press the On/Off button.
    3. Ensure that the gears are not binding or slipping by manually advancing the chart one full rotation with the chart rotation button.
    4. Another possibility is that the pen(s) are not completely inserted on the pen arm(s).
